Radisson Blu Mall of America in Bloomington has recently opened in Bloomington, Minnesota. Marking the second North American location for Radisson Blu, the hotel’s design- by Jim Hamilton of by Glasgow, UK-based Graven Images-showcases its Minnesota roots.
For instance, inspired by Minnesota’s lakes, Hamilton wove an abstract translation of the colors and shapes within an aerial-inspired rug on the first floor lobby. When viewed from the second floor lobby, it gives a visually condensed, abstract impression of the state’s landscape.

In the main and junior ballrooms, a double helix DNA pattern is woven into the carpet. The inspiration comes from the hotel’s proximity to Minneapolis and St. Paul and the relationship between the Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group and Mortenson Construction⎯⎯the joint developers of the property.
“The central vision for the hotel’s design surrounds local and regional inspiration⎯⎯an abstract representation of Minnesota’s history and unparalleled landscape,” says Hamilton. “From the walls and carpet to the furniture and wall art, every element tells a compelling story.”
First designed by Hamilton for the Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel in Chicago, the hotel offers its own gallery space. Hamilton chose unique wall-mounted objects as well as stand-alone furniture pieces including hanging loungers suspended 40 feet high.
