S.K.I.N. Design Studio has unveiled its model room for the complete redesign of La Pensione boutique hotel in downtown San Diego’s Little Italy district. The firm is transforming the interiors, infusing a contemporary urban aesthetic while paying homage to the neighborhood’s Italian heritage. Principal designer Deniece Duscheone has integrated luxurious touches such as Frette linens and Carrara marble while designing customized furniture pieces to maximize space, such as a modern desk that dually functions as a dresser and a white pearlized faux ostrich skin headboard. The bedroom features Italian glass light pendants and silver foil wallcoverings, with rain showers and polished nickel fixtures in European style bathrooms.
For the color palette, Duscheone drew inspiration from the masters of Italian painting and sculpture. Shades of gray and white on the walls and floors, along with textural elements such as crown molding, mimic the play of light and shadow on the surfaces of a Bernini sculpture. The designer also introduced bright golden shades of ochre through accent features such as custom pillows and seating.
