Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts will open a 350-room resort in Lhasa, Tibet China, the highest region on earth, in 2012. The hotel will include modern interpretations of traditional Tibetan architecture, while interiors will feature locally produced arts, crafts, and fabrics. The hotel will also take into consideration the difficulties travelers face acclimating to the high altitude. As such, extensive gardens featuring indigenous plants are designed to increase oxygen levels in the area; in addition, a full-service on-site clinic will attend to guests experiencing troubles with the high altitude.
The Shangri-La will feature all-day dining and Chinese restaurants, a bar, lobby lounge, an indoor swimming pool, health club, and an 18,300-square-foot grand ballroom complemented by several smaller function rooms.
