Shangri-La has broken ground on its second property in Sri Lanka. Surrounded by a golf course, coconut plantations, and sand dunes, Shangri-La’s Hambantota Resort and Spa is set along the country’s southern coast. The environment will play a big role in the resort’s development; plans call for a conservation program for endangered species, an eco center that promotes environmental awareness, and hot water produced via solar energy.
When it opens in 2014, the hotel will feature 315 oversized guestrooms with balconies; CHI spa, offering 10 treatment rooms; two pools; a lobby lounge; an all-day-dining restaurant; Asian specialty and North Indian restaurants; two pool bars; golf clubhouse lounge; and nearly 30,000 square feet of function space.
