Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts will open the Shangri-La Hotel, At The Shard, London on May 6th. Housed inside the 1,004-foot-high Shard skyscraper, the hotel will be the Hong Kong-based luxury hotel group’s third in Europe, following debuts in Paris in 2010 and Istanbul in 2013.
As the tallest hotel in Western Europe and the first high-rise hotel in London, the Shangri-La will occupy floors 34 to 52 of the 72-story Shard. Its contemporary interior design complements Renzo Piano’s architecture and overlooks landmarks such as St. Paul’s Cathedral, Tower Bridge, and the Houses of Parliament.
“Our continued expansion in Europe reflects the growth opportunities for the brand and portfolio,” says Greg Dogan, Shangri-La president and CEO. “The Shard is a landmark synonymous with London and we hope to encourage visitors to our hotel and the surrounding area.”
Inside, a collection of modern and classic art mixed with Asian and British works and subtle Asian touches reflects Shangri-La’s heritage in the lobby and lobby lounge. A grand staircase sweeps across double length floor-to-ceiling windows, linking levels 34 and 35 within the hotel’s sky lobby.
The 202 guestrooms and suites will range from 323 to 2,024 square feet, each with a unique layout and design owing to The Shard’s spiral shape. All feature floor-to-ceiling windows and marble-clad bathrooms with heated floors, separate bathtubs, Acqua di Parma amenities, and mirrors with integrated television screens.
The hotel will feature three wining and dining venues. GÅŽNG, London’s highest bar on level 52, takes its name from “dougong”-an ancient Chinese structural element of interlocking wooden brackets that will be a component of the bar’s interior. TÎNG, derived from the Chinese word for a living room, is the signature restaurant and lounge on level 35; and LÁNG-the Chinese word for “pathway”-is an artisan deli on the ground floor.
