Shangri-La Hotel, Toronto has opened its doors. A hand-hewn stainless steel sculpture called Rising from contemporary Chinese artist Zhang Huan welcomes guests as it reaches from the street up the glass tower and into the hotel’s two-story lobby. Filled with natural light, the 90-seat Lobby Lounge showcases four large-scale Chinese calligraphy paintings that depict women from the famed Peking Opera, an Italian handcrafted light-oak Fazioli piano with the words to My Old Man by Canadian artist Joni Mitchell carved into its lid, and contemporary furniture in dove-gray leather.
The lobby lounge leads to the bar, highlighted by 180 hand-blown glass fixtures in varying shades of green hanging above. Meanwhile, an oak wall carves out the restaurant’s name, Bosk; the venue features a private dining enclave and a seasonal outdoor terrace that wraps around the corner of the building.
Guest elevators open onto a wall covered in raw silk, an Asian credenza, and replicas of Chinese Emperor chairs. Carpeting in rich aubergine, chocolate, and taupe with touches of burnt orange displays subtle imagery of mountain ranges and bamboo motifs. In the hallways, glass cases house Asian figurines, vases, and pottery. Residential-style furnishings and finishings set the tone in the hotel’s 202 spacious guestrooms and suites. Bathrooms are equally luxurious with black-veined white marble, walk-in shower with rain showerhead, mirrors embedded with LCD TVs, and a marble-topped vanity reminiscent of an Asian table. The 49 suites include the dark and dramatic Owner’s Suite, highlighted by a wood-paneled entrance, while the Shangri-La Suite features an open, airy motif accented by Japanese lattice screens, oak molding, and pewter marble.
Function space encompasses 14,626 square feet in four distinct areas on the third floor, characterized by red-veined black marble set against white oak millwork and crystal chandeliers hanging over leather sofas. Event spaces include a 42-seat screening room with oversized merlot leather chairs and a two-story glass room where 13 crystal chandeliers are positioned at varying heights.
For leisure, guests have access to a health club that includes a separate room with a candlelit wall, cascading water columns, and chandeliers housing the lap pool. Miraj Hamman Spa by Caudalie, Paris rounds out the hotel’s offerings.
