Starwood Hotels & Resorts has announced that it has 50 hotels slated to open in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa over the next five years. A dozen of those properties will debut in 2011 alone. Key upcoming openings in the region include five new St. Regis hotels in destinations such as Italy, Mauritius, UAE, and Qatar; the debut of W Hotels in London, Paris, and St. Petersburg; and the launch of Le Meridien in Turkey.
In particular, the company is focusing on fast-growing Russia and Turkey, whose economies are both expected to grow more than 4 percent in 2011. Starwood will double its portfolio in Russia by 2013 and will see a 60 percent growth rate in Turkey.
