Starwood Hotels & Resorts is coming off a successful 2011, when it opened 81 hotels representing 21,000 keys. The company is on track to open 80 properties this year; more than 60 percent of them will be in the luxury and upper-upscale segment. About three-fourths of new hotels in 2012 will open outside North America, with 60 percent slated for Asia Pacific. China alone accounts for 35 of Starwood’s hotel openings this year, bringing the portfolio in the region to 250 properties. Other strong markets in the region include Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. Starwood also is laying the groundwork for future hotel development in Brazil and Africa.
