Boutique resort Sugar Ridge in Antigua has opened its main restaurant, Sugar Club. Guests can dine indoors at this distinctly Caribbean venue or outside on the veranda overlooking the swimming pool. The interior design, courtesy of Charmaine Benjamin-Werth of d Studio in Antigua, fuses modern style with the rich history of the region.
Benjamin-Werth drew inspiration from a table she found, which was made from a fallen tree with legs comprising large branches. The tree inspired table became the buffet, and the theme grew from there into that of a commissary for plantation workers. The chairs and tables are all a mix-match of various styles. The lamps are versions of handwoven basket shades, all hung at various heights, while fans are industrial factory style. The flooring is a rustic wood planked floor. The artwork displayed in the restaurant is made up of photos taken Benjamin-Werth’s 17-year-old daughter, Charmy, and were all taken at Betty’s Hope in Antigua. Wall lamps are by Jonathan Adler and mirror the finish on the feature wall behind the buffet. The balconies feature a combination of lounge seating and dining seating. The bar area is painted a warm gray, which envelops and serves to highlight the mostly white furniture and art. Large round 60-inch white leather round ottomans and low sofas and sectionals make up the seating, along with conical wooden club chairs and geometrical orange sofas and chairs. Lighting is a combination of floor, table, and pendant lamps in glass, wood, metal, and ceramic.
