Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi is exhibiting his “Discovering Columbus” installation in New York. For his first public project in the U.S., Nishi has re-imagined the 13-foot-tall marble statue of Christopher Columbus-which rises more than 75 feet over Columbus Circle-into a fictional 800-square-foot living room. The fully furnished setting features hardwood floors, chairs, a sofa, rugs, flatscreen TV, and wallpaper inspired by Nishi’s memories of watching American movies and TV as a child in Japan. The statue itself “sits” atop a coffee table.
Nishi was named a finalist in the 2012 Radical Innovation in Hospitality competition for the Merlion Hotel (pictured), which envisioned bringing the Singapore Merlion monument inside into a hotel room.
“Discovering Columbus” is on display at Columbus Circle through November 18. For more information, click here.
