The Fogo Island Inn has opened in Newfoundland-a vision of Shorefast Foundation and its founder Zita Cobb. Investing in her birthplace, Cobb opened the 29-room hotel to help reinvigorate the local economy.
Designed by Norwegian architect Todd Saunders, the inn’s exterior complements the natural landscape with simple, strong lines. It also echoes the aesthetic of Shorefast’s Fogo Island Artist Studios-six communities for visiting artists and leaders. The inn also houses the Fogo Island Contemporary Art Gallery, the Dr. Leslie A. Harris Heritage Library, and the Fogo Island Cinema.
Throughout the inn, local history plays an integral role with locally sourced furniture and fixtures. Local women handcrafted all quilts, rugs, and pillows, while local people and international designers-with London-based Ilse Crawford as advisor-completed the interiors.
Referencing parts of the island, the rooms fall into eight accommodation categories-including the Mooring, Storehouse, and Gappy. The property has a restaurant, lounge, bar, and conference center, while the inn’s rooftop features Northern-European style wood-fired saunas and hot tubs for stargazers.
