EDITION Hotels-Ian Schrager‘s brand conceived in partnership with Marriott-is expanding to London. Set to open this fall-marking Schrager’s return to the city since he opened the Sanderson and St Martins Lane 15 years ago, the hotel will preserve its historic home with a new reinvention of space.
Formerly the Berner Hotel, the building was originally built in 1835 and now takes inspiration from English country manors and private gentleman’s clubs. Behind a refined Georgian exterior, the hotel will house a dance club, two bars, a fitness facility, and 173 rooms and suites.
Beneath stucco ceilings, the lobby atrium will greet guests with original marble stone floors, walls, and the corner bar. Berner’s Tavern sits to the right and will be furnished with banquettes in chestnut mohair and taupe leather with rift cut bleached oak tables. Towards the back of the hotel, the Punch Room reincarnates 19th-century private clubs with tufted banquettes in teal velvet, overstuffed mint green leather tub chairs, and dark brown leather club chairs.
Even with all of the century-old touches from the original hotel, the London EDITION will be swathed in modern décor including Christian Liaigre black metal furniture, Salvador Dali-inspired floor lamps, and chandeliers inspired by Grand Central Station. A dance club mimics the popular nightclub lighting of the 1970s.

The color palette also joins old with new with dusty rose upholstery against burnt ochre walls and khaki, pale green leather and mustard velvets. As the neutral space of the hotel’s multiple influences, the guestrooms will be paneled in either dark walnut or light oak and furnished with traditional tufted slipper-chairs, a neutral color palette, and gilt-framed Dutch Masters.
