This spring, the New School presents a wide range of public programs that build on the university’s legacy as a haven for innovation and experimentation in the arts and its commitment to social activism and engaged citizenship. Events include:
The Sheila C. Johnson Design Center (SJDC) at Parsons The New School for Design will present a number of exhibitions, including The Storyteller (January 29-April 9), which explores how contemporary artists use storytelling as a way of understanding the urgent social and political events of our time. Building Energy Positive (January 25-31) is an exhibition that investigates new frontiers in solar power and sustainable design. As a closing event to the current SJDC exhibition Detour, which showcases notable Norwegian public architecture, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum will host Detour: Art, Architecture, Cities and Landscapes (January 19), a discussion with architects including Pritzker-Prize winner Peter Zumthor and Snøhetta principal Craig Dykers.
To mark the establishment of its new MFA in Fashion Design and Society, Parsons will also present the exhibition and symposium WORKWEAR (February 8-March 5) at the SJDC, which explores the legacy of workwear as a uniform for success. There will also be a series of evening talks, starting with Parsons alumna Donna Karan (February 3), who helped to initiate the MFA through her support.
Parsons will also present a number of discussions with notable artists, designers, and writers, including renowned architecture critic Paul Goldberger, Joseph Urban Professor of Design at The New School, in conversation with Parsons Dean Joel Towers (February 18); graphic designer Scott Stowell (January 28); architect Avi Oster (January 21); and architect Eyal Weizman (February 12). In addition, Parsons is partnering with the Museum of Modern Art to present HEADSPACE (March 26), a daylong symposium on the conception, impact, and potential applications of scent in design. Parsons’ new MFA in Interior Design will also present the fourth annual AFTERTASTE symposium (April 2-3), which explores topical issues in the field of interior design.
