Philadelphia’s Rittenhouse hotel has opened its library bar and expanded its afternoon tea service. As the first in a series of enhancements, these additions evoke past traditions along with a more contemporary touch.
Named for its intimate design and collection of books and fine art, the newly built library bar is part of $10 million revitalization at the hotel. New York-based designer Alexandra Champalimaud furnished the space with dark paneled wood and herringbone patterned stained oak floors. Golden leather barstools and banquettes give the bar with an intimate atmosphere, while curated books and fine art recall Philadelphia history.

Standout design elements include an etched glass map of old Philadelphia across the back bar, a limestone fireplace, a black glass chandelier, and a Macassar ebony bar with a Carrara marble bar top. Champalimaud’s designs will be incorporated throughout the ongoing enhancements to debut at the Rittenhouse this year.
Also designed by Champalimaud, the Mary Cassatt tea room maintains the room’s original grandeur with inspirations taken from artist Mary Cassatt the only American painter invited to exhibit with the French Impressionists in 1879. Floor-to-ceiling windows, a drapery backdrop, and modern chandeliers surround the Impressionist palette and new furnishings.
