New York City was the top tourist destination in 2009, attracting 42.25 million visitors, mayor Michael Bloomberg tells the New York Daily News. Even though the number of tourists fell 3.9 percent from 2008 totals, the Big Apple holds the title as most visited city for the first time since 1990, topping Orlando. International travel to the city dropped nearly 10 percent, while domestic visitors remained steady. Bloomberg cites H1N1 fears, the global recession, and less-than-friendly border security as reasons for the drop in worldwide tourists. City officials say they’re on track to meet their goal of 50 million visitors by 2012.
