Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts has rebranded the Traders Hotel, Yangon in Myanmar to operate as Sule Shangri-La, Yangon, following a two-and-a-half year renovation.
The 484-room hotel has a modern exterior, but the lobby recalls its colonial past with white columns and a grand staircase that ascends to an open balcony. The classic look extends to the adjacent lobby lounge, where a tiered crystal chandelier highlights a wall mural and panels detailed with peacock motifs.
The public spaces are lined with ornate Burmese vases, panes of intricate woodcarvings, and pieces by local artists such as Ba Khine and Hla Phone Aung. The hotel showcases the works of several local artists and craftsmen, and their works are creative depictions of Burmese stories.
For dining, Summer Palace, Shangri-La’s signature Chinese restaurant, has red and mahogany accents that contrast the light walls and patterned ceiling. Chinese paintings and fabric finishes around light fixtures complement the space and its six private dining rooms.

The Gallery Bar was also modified to reflect a public drinking house from the British era. Furnished with wrought iron and brass details, the dark wood interiors are filled with memorabilia and photographs from the early 1800s. The hotel’s renovation also includes Café Sule, the Peacock Lounge, and the Gourmet Shop.
