W Hotels Worldwide has unveiled details of W Verbier in Switzerland, the brand’s first alpine and ski retreat. Dutch firm Concrete Architectural Associates, which is designing the resort, is taking its cues from the carve of the ski through the snow. Contemporary glass atria connect four traditional wooden chalet-style buildings, allowing natural light while creating a link between the mountain slopes above and the views of the valley below.
“For the first W alpine retreat, we wanted to provide guests with an unforgettable experience using interiors that complement the breathtaking scenery surrounding the hotel,” says Rob Wagemans, founder and creative director of Concrete Architectural Associates. “Our design introduces smooth lines that carve through the spaces with contrasting materials reflecting the simplicity, beauty, and energy of Verbier and the contemporary cool of New York.”

To that end, the firm is implementing a mix of natural and modern materials, including seating areas carved out of solid wood blocks; local stone adorning walls and the welcome desks; climbing ropes used to hang lamps; and soft furnishings covered in leather, nylon, fur, and Lycra. In the guestrooms, rustic wooden, chalet-style features (including a fireplace) are positioned with sleek furnishings and contemporary lighting.
One of the atria will feature a decorative climbing wall with gold and silver climbing stones, while another will house a giant showpiece staircase leading down to the entrance to Carve, the hotel’s destination bar. Here, a vivid red curved entrance leads inside, where dramatic black walls and furnishings accent a field of convex ceiling mirrors. Meanwhile, benches of varying lengths will make seating appear to be carved out of the material. Additional F&B options include Restaurant Arola, which boasts a terrace and tapas bar, as well as the W Living Room and W Café.
The hotel also will feature a spa with nine treatment rooms, a sauna, and hammam; indoor/outdoor pool with a bar area and underwater lighting; and a fitness center.
