Australian skincare brand Aesop has opened its latest store within the Piazza di San Lorenzo in the heart of the Italian capital. The Roman retail space was crafted in collaboration with famed Italian film director Luca Guadagnino, whose credits include films like A Bigger Splash, Call Me By Your Name, and this year’s Suspiria. The project marks the entry of Guadagnino’s eponymous studio into commercial interior design; the team previously oversaw the renovation of a residence in Lake Como.
Crafted to complement the vernacular of the city’s ancient architecture, the new store includes a material palette of roughened stone, rose-tinted marble, and even sporadic notes of straw. The former lighting shop was radically overhauled, replacing false ceilings and expanding a previously covered storefront window to make the interior feel larger. Gray, rhombus-shaped travertine floors span the store in homage to the nearby San Lorenzo church, while a central counter composed of dark green and pink marble is illuminated by a singular pendant. Two standalone marble basins accented with copper faucets are also featured. Lacquered shelving showcases Aesop products in cream tones.
