New York-based streetwear brand ALUMNI has launched its first international location within a restored industrial structure in Chengdu, China. ALUMNI’s fourth storefront overall, the 2,900-square-foot brick-and-mortar space features a design by Beijing-based FON Studio that fuses Chinese and Western architectural elements. The concept nods to the building’s heritage as a gunpowder factory with a palette of raw, earthy materials, including birch wood, ceramics, and sleek metal.
“We are always keen on the subtle connection between the original sense of time of the building and these newly divided space blocks within the store,” says FON Studio cofounder Jin Boan. “Each part has its own atmosphere but is still connected tightly and functionally. We and the ALUMNI team wanted it to be an open reception space with multiple possibilities, to have a continuous explosion and growth of curiosity and creativity in this open space.”
