Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) has completed its design of The Twist, a new art gallery in Jevnaker, Norway. The 10,700-square-foot design functions as a bridge between two riverbanks in Kistefos, the largest sculpture park in the northern Europe.
Clad with aluminum panels across its exterior, the unorthodox gallery features interiors wrapped in fir slats across its walls, floors, and ceilings. Visitors arriving through the southern entrance will encounter a dramatic, double-height space framing sight lines of the venue’s three internal galleries. The form initiates its 90-degree twist at the center of the building, stretching from a windowless southern portion to unzip the exterior into floor-to-ceiling glazing that illuminates one of the exhibition spaces. The Twist is also home to a subterranean area lined with concrete and glass, conceived to form a visual extension of the river surrounding it.
