London-based architecture firm Foster + Partners has completed Apple’s newest store in the Marunouchi business district of Tokyo. The tech giant’s third Japanese store to open since April, the new output is the largest in the company’s footprint so far, as well as the fifth one in Tokyo.
The façade of the spacious retail space compromises cast aluminum with 3D, rounded corners, which are all punctuated by two-story vitrine windows with bamboos planted inside, while the double-height atrium allows for a bond between both levels of the interior. “We wanted to create a restrained presence amid the bustle of Tokyo,” says Stefan Behling, head of Studio at Foster + Partners. “The aluminum vitrines define the boundary of the store while offering pedestrians a glimpse into it, connecting the store with its surroundings.”
