The Saudi Arabia cities of Mecca, Medina, Jeddah, and King Abdullah Economic City have each debuted new high-speed rail stations crafted by Foster + Partners. Equipped to accommodate between 60 and 135 million annual travelers, the four stations are connected by the 280-mile Haramain rail line.
All four stations are designed based on a nearly 300-square-foot module that comprised a roof, concourse, and platform. The flexible model ensures easy reconfiguration to support the expansion of stations to provide access to existing transport networks.
The architectural traditions of the region are echoed throughout each station. Steel columns support vaulted roofs crafted to establish shaded areas, while roofing and walls are also punctured to gently infuse natural light. In addition to large chandeliers, the interiors are outfitted with fans and misting devices on platforms to ensure low ambient temperatures.
