Swedish home goods retailer IKEA received the top architecture prize at the seventh annual Chart Art Fair 2019, which celebrates contemporary Nordic art and design.
Constructed in 72 hours (along with four other pavilions) in response to this year’s materiality theme, the double-height timber structure, Sultan, was wrapped in a huggable façade of upcycled IKEA mattresses. The installation featured metal springs, foam stuffing, and fabric from the mattresses that were repurposed to form a layered, textured wall and a living space. The design team included Anne Bea Høgh Mikkelsen, Katrine Kretzschmar Nielsen, Klara Lyshøj, and Josefine Østergaard Kallehave.
Located in the courtyard of the Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Sultan was also home to 1664 Blanc bar.
