Japanese architect Kengo Kuma has spearheaded the design of a new Starbucks location within 29 stacked shipping containers in Hualien, Taiwan. Spread across more than 3,400 square feet, the new outpost is home to numerous intimate spaces as well as a drive-thru. Abundant sun exposure is maximized through several skylights and single-pane windows that transform the interior. A glazed lobby welcomes visitors with wood-lined booths and low tables. The staggered containers are arranged to reference the foliage of coffee trees as well as traditional Chinese bucket arches.
Although the project is Kuma’s first involving shipping containers, it is one of more than 45 retail concepts from Starbucks that incorporate such volumes. The Seattle-based coffee giant is continuing to invest in prefabricated modular stores as part of its effort to double down on sustainability.
