A chic new laundromat, Lavandaria Morinha, has opened in the town of Vila Meã in Amarante, Portugal. Crafted by locally based design firm Stu.dere, the contemporary aesthetic draws influence from washhouses—communal buildings and spaces that were common to the region in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Visitors are greeted with a line of washing machines and a row of marble tables and timber chairs. Red neon signage displaying the laundrette’s name offsets the pervasive green-glazed tiles. Microcement spans the floors, greenery is suspended from the ceiling, and porthole windows throughout the space echo the shape of washing machine drums.
