Japanese minimalist retailer MUJI has launched its newest U.S. outpost in Midtown Manhattan. Located at the intersection of 59th Street and Lexington Avenue, the 11,800-square-foot outpost is now the third largest in the company’s global retail portfolio. The open layout showcases rustic wooden beams composed of reclaimed materials to reflect the brand’s emphasis on sourcing the best materials for all of its products. The new store will provide extensive personalized services as well.
MUJI started in Japan in 1980 and now has more than 400 stores there. It opened its first store outside of Japan in London in 1991, adding an additional 400 to its portfolio since then. MUJI USA currently has 18 stores in the U.S., with seven in California and eight in the greater New York area, plus a store in Boston, New Jersey, and Portland.
