The 57-year-old Barbara Jordan Post Office in is set to undergo a comprehensive overhaul at the hand of OMA. The historic post office and warehouse will be rebranded as the POST Houston mixed-use hub, which will be home to offices, retail, and a rooftop farm. The first phase of redevelopment is slated for completion in summer 2020.
Located in the heart of city’s Theater District, POST Houston will be home to 130,000 square feet of traditional offices as well as 20,000 square feet of co-working space. A 70,000-square-foot hotel will be created alongside 60,000 square feet of retail, 50,000 square feet of public spaces, and a 45,000-square-foot food hall. An 80,000-square-foot concert venue and 45,000 square feet of exhibition, performance, and cultural space will round out the onsite arts facilities. The rooftop garden and farm will total 170,000 square feet to become one of the largest planted rooftops in the world.
The rooftops of the building’s three atria will be replaced with ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) panels that will infuse natural light into the lofted interior. Circulation will be upgraded as well with a network of new staircases that lead to the roof as they zig-zag around designated retail space on the first and second floors.
