RH has announced the opening of RH New York, the Gallery in the historic Meatpacking District. The latest collaboration between RH and architect James Gillam of Backen, Gillam & Kroeger, the new hub is housed within a refurbished 19th century structure originally owned by John Jacob Astor. The five-floor concept accommodates all of RH’s businesses: RH Interiors, Modern, Outdoor, Baby & Child, and Teen, as well as the interior design practice, which RH has embedded into the retail experience for the first time.
Totaling 90,000 square feet, the modern building comprises steel and glass as well as the preserved historic brick façade. Cast iron I-beams evoke the heritage of the neighborhood, while a skylit, six-story atrium welcomes visitors and a transparent lift provides transport to the glass-encased Rooftop Restaurant and Outdoor Park. Open throughout the year, the Rooftop Restaurant is appointed with crystal chandeliers, Asiatic jasmine plants, Japanese boxwood hedging, and numerous pleached London plane trees. The space organically connects to the Park & Wine Terrace, which features a series of intimate garden rooms outfitted with overhead canopies, sculptural evergreens, and fountains. The Barista Bar on the third floor rounds out F&B options onsite, complete with an adjacent outdoor terrace.
Also debuting onsite is New York Night, a striking six-story art installation of 120 handblown crystal teardrop pendants by artist Alison Berger. The artwork cascades 90 feet through the void of the six-story staircase, reminiscent of a downpour at nightfall.
