Chinese department store SKP Beijing has introduced a new lifestyle concept known as Rendez-vous, which is also slated to launch in the company’s Xi’an outpost next year. Designed by London-based architectural practice Sybarite, the new concept arrives as part of the Beijing store’s extensive overhaul.
Located on the fourth floor, Rendez-vous hosts a variety of curated vendors like Rendez-vous coffee, the TWG tea room, an artisanal cheese room, and a wine bar and cellar. The restaurant Without Borders is also featured along with a bookstore. Punctuated with brushed brass, Rendez-vous is crafted with a simple material palette of walnut, black lacquered steel, and marble flooring that showcases naturally occurring light and dark gray tones. Steel elements demonstrate uniformity and rhythm throughout with a geometric language that ties each space together. The dining area stands out with vibrant red tabletops made from painted glass, while bookshelves sweep into the space. Banquette seating and industrial light pendants are also featured.
“It was very important that the Rendez-vous design enhanced rather than overpowered the products, clearly communicating the Rendez-vous language, delivered through the architectural environment. We designed a store concept that could be scalable, and the simplicity of the design allows it to be used across the different categories within the store,” says Sybarite co-founder Torquil McIntosh.
