British design brand Tom Dixon Studio has unveiled a new hub in Shanghai as part of its expansion in Asia. Located in the affluent Xintiandi district, the flagship and retail space—the brand’s third in China—is housed within a traditional Chinese structure enveloped in a sprawl of Shikumen architecture.
“China is one of our most important markets,” says Tom Dixon Studio CEO Hans Hoegstedt. “We searched for two years for this location with the intention to support China’s design community. Our Shanghai hub is designed to be a place where our customers can fully experience Tom’s extraordinary products.”
The Shanghai store honors the local vernacular with elements like a prominent main entrance gate composed of double wooden doors and windows adorned with geometric wooden patterns. A central courtyard evokes a distinctive Tom Dixon ethos that emphasizes materiality as well as the human senses. Interior updates yield a clean, minimalist aesthetic detailed with the brand’s signature stylish industrial flair. Oriented around a central hall and courtyard, rooms on the ground floor include a living room, library, bathroom, and office defined by evolving typologies. Stone, metal, and glass serve as a backdrop for the Tom Dixon product collections.
