Li Xiang of X+Living embarked on the design of the new FAB Cinema in Xi’an, China with the goal of weaving a cinematic narrative across the entire venue. Spread across more than 12,000 square feet, the new cinema and retail space reimagines traditional aspects of the moviegoing experience as emotional and engaging scenes.
The sales and ticket areas were conceived as fashionable “prop boxes” accented by large floor lamps that emit varied geometries of light and shadow and engage with the gradient floors. Four theaters are created with an avant-garde approach that integrates a lounge bar into the theater space.
Elements like claw machines incentivize visitors to linger before or after screenings. A black and gold palette defines each of the theater spaces. Seating options include from dark red sofas, beds, and even bathtubs. More casual furniture—like directors’ chairs—populate the bar area. Walls and ceiling coverings are equipped with sound-absorbing technology as well.
The first theater evokes the qualities of a European-inspired study, lined with classic bookcases and black and red seating. The second theater recalls an artist’s living room with Dutch-style walls adorned with geometric details and whimsical elements—like a bunny sculpture and hat-shaped ceiling fixtures. Theater three features black-and-white striped carpet and seating, along with yellow seating that pops against the dark green walls. Finally, theater four is crafted akin to a futuristic surreal street, outfitted with neon lighting and rich colorways.
