A new bus station in Tilburg, the Netherlands by Dutch firm Cepezed Architects is a new benchmark for sustainability. The transport facility generates its own energy as it organically integrates into the setting.
The design comprises a triangular circuit as well as a series of thin columns and a minimalist awning structure atop them. With an open space at the center, the design also features six boarding zones oriented along the outer stretch of the station as well as an additional zone for unloading. Greenery divides the station’s three segments, while an elevated terrace adjoins the commercial space.
The sprawling awning is composed of a steel framework wrapped in ETFE-foil and crowned with nearly 2,700 square feet of solar panels. The awning filters sunlight during daylight hours and serves as a spacious lighting element after sunset.
