Four Seasons Hotel Austin has begun its Zero Waste program, which aims to increase the waste diversion rate from less than 10 percent to 90 percent. The property has partnered with Texas Disposal Systems, which handles recycling, compost, and landfill.
The hotel will rely on guest participation to help meet its goal. All trash cans in the 291 guestrooms are being replaced with specially designed containers featuring two compartments, one for recycling and another for trash. Rooms will also now contain a compost bag with easy-to-understand instructions. In addition, every department of the hotel will have revamped trash containers with instructions about which items constitute trash, compost, and recyclable materials.
