A new hotel in Delavan, Wisconsin, aims to be the first net-zero energy lodging in North America. Scheduled to open in 2013, the Green Leaf Inn includes the remodeling of an existing cottage with three suites, eating area, commercial kitchen, and laundry, as well as construction of a new building with 16 additional suites and welcome center.
Phase one of construction is currently underway, with energy- and water-saving elements such as:
- An on-site aerobic waste water treatment
- 18,000-gallon rainwater storage tank
- 153-foot Endurance 50kw wind turbine
- Cogeneration system generating hot water and electricity
- Three different solar thermal hot water systems with a 1,250-gallon solar thermal storage tank insulated to R80
- Geothermal heating and cooling
- Solar electric (photovoltaic) systems
- LED lighting
In addition, the renovated cottage features a new metal roof, along with energy-efficient windows and patio door. Phase two will comprise the interior renovation of the cottage, while the third phase will include the construction of the new building.
