The Greenstone Inn in Newport, Oregon, opens next month as a tribute to all things environmentally friendly. The hotel’s owners deconstructed existing 85-year-old cottages, recycling the materials. The architectural design incorporates two peaked metal rooflines pitched at an optimal angle for energy collection by solar panels. Greenstone Inn feeds electricity to the grid. A waste-water heat reclamation system and key card room temperature management are also among the sustainability efforts.
All building and furnishing materials were selected with environmental consideration: green certified recycled materials for carpeting; wood-clad doors and window frames; low-VOC paints; drapes and upholstery fabrics made primarily from recycled water bottles; Energy Star-rated appliances; recycled structural steel; certified renewable forest wood; water-saving showers and toilets; and low-energy, compact florescent lighting.
