Grupo Mayan Resorts in Mexico has expanded its involvement in environmental and ecological protection. The resort chain, which has four locations, has completed all three steps needed to achieve EarthCheck documentation, an international certification for sustainable tourism: affiliation, benchmarking (operational efficiency indicators and environmental impact), and certification (gained after two onsite audits). The properties also follow strict energy and waste conservation procedures and monitor ecosystem, air, and noise residuals.
Each resort features guestrooms equipped with water-conserving toilets, faucets, and showers and uses recycled water to irrigate their golf course and landscape while avoiding irrigation during peak sun hours. Other sustainable efforts include composting; selling recyclable materials back to their suppliers; and participating in En Advance, which unites efforts for the preservation of Mexican ecology and the protection of the marine turtle.
