Mexico’s Mayan Resorts have received certification from EarthCheck, which validates a hotel’s carbon claims and provides guidance for sustainability initiatives. The organization has three criteria: environmental conservation practices, support of local communities, and cultural traditions. Mayan Resorts have integrated sustainability for their construction, landscaping, golf courses, restaurants, hotel operations, and transportation. Specific environmental practices include recycling, protection of local flora and fauna, and indigenous landscaping. Resort employees are also evaluated for involvement in conservation efforts, plantings, beach clean-up, and mentoring of children to care about the environment.
Since 2004, four Mayan Resorts have earned EarthCheck recognition, the most recent being Mayan Resort Los Cabos in July 2009. Others to hold the honor include Mayan Resorts in Riviera Maya, Puerto Vallarta, and Acapulco.
