What’s the vibe of the recent Generator openings in Paris and London?
London was inspired by the local surroundings as well as the lyrical, creative, and literary history of the city and the UK. Each floor has a theme pertaining to these influences, with the bar containing perhaps the most unique feature—a Routemaster bus fashioned into a DJ booth.
Paris is perhaps our grandest property yet. The interior design was inspired by the cinematic experience of strolling Paris’ streets and discovering its romantic moments, changing moods and rich colors. I’m looking forward to our roof terrace, opening this summer, which will have a spectacular bar with a pop-up crêpe stand and sunset views of Montmartre and Sacré-Coeur.
You partnered again with DesignAgency on those locations—what makes the firm a good fit for Generator?
Having worked closely with DA for more than five years, we consider them deep and long-lasting partners. The form and function of their design, coupled with their ability to deliver unique feeling spaces, is what draws us to them. We want our Generators to feel special and unique to a city, rather than a cookie cutter experience. DA listens and is inspired by what is going on in the various areas and micro locations.
Why is design so important for these hostels?
Travel is about experience, memories, and education. We see design as a way to accomplish this mix—when people walk into the public spaces, they are inspired by the visuals, and hopefully educated by the local art, music, or events we are doing. All of these items start and end with innovative, playful and meaningful design moments as the guest progresses from that first footstep inside to the moment they enter their room.
Tell us about the Rome and Amsterdam locations coming up.
Each of these cities has booming creative and culinary movements. Rome, in a way, is being reborn, with an influx of artists and creatives—we’ll feed off that energy. Amsterdam, especially where we are located right on the Oosterpark, is the epicenter of art and culture. Our building is right on the park and has a serene and natural feeling. It is a former sciences and history school, and we intend to keep the influence and historical feel of the building while mixing it into the surrounding nature.
What else is in the Generator pipeline?
We have great ambition, but it is all about going to cities where we fit in well with the local area. We have plans for Miami, LA, and Toronto, and are actively looking at other on-brand, interesting markets.
