Set on 103 acres in Coos Bay along Oregon’s southern coast, Bay Point Landing is a quiet, modern campground that calls the secluded beach home. Originally drafted as a simple re-layout of an RV park, the campground now comprises 11 Scandinavian-inspired cabins, 13 Airstream trailers, and 147 RV sites. “The focus is more on lifestyle travelers who have a higher design expectation,” says Christian Robert, principal of Los Angeles- and Portland-based OfficeUntitled (formerly known as R&A Architecture and Design). “They get the experience of great service while preserving the flavor and aesthetic of camping.”
Upon arrival, guests check in to the modern clubhouse that opens up to dramatic views of the bay. Surrounded by an outdoor deck, its “design language borrows from the local vernacular,” says Robert, pointing to the regionally harvested wood used for shingles that were charred to a blackened-silver hue to mimic pieces of driftwood found on the beach post-bonfire. Modest interiors boast warm wood tones, concrete, and full-height windows shored up by diagonal glulam braces that are necessary in the seismic zone, while also creating a striking geometry. The indoor saltwater pool is a draw for an area that rarely sees the temperatures rise above 70 degrees, and is combined with a market, fitness center, event and lounge space, and firepits to foster guest interaction. “All of a sudden, you’re not just playing in the RV market,” Robert explains, “you’re opened up to a whole other typology that hasn’t been done before.”
