Designer > I’m working on a redo of the Mayflower Inn & Spa in Litchfield, Connecticut with Celerie Kemble, who is a designer that’s irreverent, brilliant, and completely mad. We are counting on that combination to produce the next generation country inn—still elegant but also relevant.
Object > I just came back from safari in Tanzania. In a roadside market, I found this Maasai milk pitcher. It’s not rare and it’s nothing fancy—in fact, it’s held together with rawhide stitching and it’s cracked all over—but it’s beautiful in its flaws and the layers of generations of use. There isn’t anything in design I find so beautiful now as patina and simplicity.
Cocktail > There are a million reasons to go to Cabo, but the only one that triggers the ‘I’m here at last’ button in my head is Osvaldo Vasquez’s Chilenito mezcal cocktail at Chileno Bay Resort. Addictive, effective, and seriously dangerous, it’s best enjoyed with your toes in the sand and the Sea of Cortez in view.
Book > From The Land. I cannot put it down. Howard Backen’s work is a lesson in perfect proportion and restraint. I have leafed through it 50 times trying to absorb how he creates the majestic harmony that has defined his architecture. I’m hoping it’s getting in through osmosis.
Place > We just opened the Lodge at Blue Sky outside Park City, Utah as a contemporary reinterpretation of a mountain lodge. The sense of calm and outdoor vistas will take your breath away. Hike to the ‘old tavern’ up the mountain and do a High West Distillery tasting. It’s worth it.
