After leaving behind a stable career working in the undergraduate admissions office at Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis for the world of hospitality, Robin Staten was inspired to launch Tiny Urban Escapes, an exciting new journey with “a fairytale-like beginning,” she says. Partnering with Glasshaus Living, repurposed shipping containers located outside Indianapolis form five charming havens (two will come online this summer, with the others to launch by the end of the year) intended for individuals seeking to find balance and unplug from city life. The concept is deeply rooted “in a personal quest for self-reinvention,” she says, while being kind to the environment. Here, Staten reveals more on becoming a small-scale hotelier with a project that packs an inspiring, large-scale punch.
How did you come up with Tiny Urban Escapes?
Like many people, I became overly fascinated with all things HGTV—more specifically their tiny home segments. I began researching all things tiny homes and came across the most captivating small space I had seen to date. It was a semi-glass repurposed shipping container designed and constructed by Glasshaus Living. I instantly knew this structure would be ideal for a collection of luxury suites. In that instant, my life changed and Tiny Urban Escapes was created. Every experience, including my current role as assistant controller of a large, 378-room Sheraton property in downtown Indianapolis, came full circle.
How did you select the Eagle Creek Park location?
There is definitely a method to the madness. I selected a serene wooded location 15 minutes outside downtown Indianapolis that is a hidden gem and ideal for creating an atmosphere of relaxation and an oasis within the city.
Tell us about your design inspiration.
I wanted to maintain a minimalist design concept complete with modern and minimalistic interiors that give way to dramatic panoramic views. I wanted to make certain the interior décor did not overpower the natural design appeal of the shipping container. The use of large windows and glazed doors that provide uninterrupted views of nature are equally significant in creating a quiet place for renewal, reflection, and rejuvenation.
What do you want guests to take away from this concept?
My hope is the suites invoke a sense of boldness and adventure in guests, a youthful spirit seemingly lost in the daily hustle and bustle. I hope guests experience a more authentic, genuine luxury unrestricted by traditional brand standards and an experience embedded in the local experience. Most importantly, I hope guests return to their daily lives feeling inspired.
What’s next for you?
I’m solely focused on the success of the Indianapolis location and creating an extraordinary experience for guests here. My family is from Tennessee, so naturally the next location would be the scenic backdrop there.
