Once completed, the Upper East Side condominium building will feature a wellness lounge with an infrared sauna, an effective way to promote intense sweating to release greater toxins from the body, regulate the stress hormone cortisol, and ease joint pain. Residents will breathe easier and feel more relaxed. The biophilic living wall in the lobby provides a green moment in the concrete jungle, emulating the experience of a traditional front lawn, which includes a pool and limestone slabs. I wanted the lobby to feel as if it were giving residents a hug as they returned home in
the evening.

We used ancient agricultural tools as art, wove the colors of our surroundings into runners, and lit the corridors with patterns of light and shadow. Recycled wine crates cover some of the walls in the Wine Library and shelves are filled with old books. In the Quinta Lounge, a collection of photographs from the family of the original owners hangs on the wall, and in the dining hall, the fireplace is flanked by walls of 18th-century Portuguese blue and white tiles. We turned a tennis court into an organic garden; within six months, the results were in the cook pots and salad bowls.

Energy healer Alberto Amura’s resonance symbols are inset in the terrazzo elevator floor, each symbol referencing and eliciting joy, wellness, prosperity, or love—a special message conveyed to, and subconsciously absorbed by, each guest. The property’s highly acclaimed climate-control system, a visually stunning architectural feature located above and adjacent to the amenity deck, uses natural wind currents to cool the local environment without the addition of cooling units. The hotel anticipates LEED NC Gold certification through innovative materials and technology, reductions in water and energy usage, and a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
