We had 17 new builds open in 2014, and 14 new builds will open in 2015
Favorite hotel
There are a few hotels I like to stay in, but the first one that comes to mind is the Grand Hyatt in Seoul. John Morford designed the hotel, and he also designed another of my favorite places to stay: the Park Hyatt Tokyo. The Grand Hyatt is nestled in Namsan, a small mountain close to central Seoul. I feel comfortable and calm there—the guestrooms are small but intelligently designed; the décor is subtly modern and elegantly humble; and I can go for a simple stroll on the hilltop or visit the nearby contemporary art museum.
Best local restaurant
One of the great places in Beijing is Temple Restaurant located in an old neighborhood called Hutong—I continuously discover small inspirations here. Not only the location of the restaurant but also the history of the building is an interesting discovery: originally it was a temple and has undergone a few historical transformations. Now it is an unforgettable dining experience. I enjoy their personable service and customized dinner menu—I feel special to be there and always look forward to return. I enjoy the minimal interior characteristics of its Chinese-ness while enjoying creative French cuisine paired with delicious wine.
Biggest travel pet peeve
At the moment, I travel two to three days out of every week, mostly domestically within China. Fellow travelers are my usual stress—I’ve discovered that many Chinese travelers have different experiences and knowledge. Respect for other travelers is almost nonexistent: loud-voiced conversations, no sense of order or public attire, and no knowledge of air travel security requirements.
Asian destination of choice
Siem Reap, Cambodia. I find Cambodians gentle and hospitable. I am also inspired by the beauty of its ancient architecture. I find my spirituality and tranquility at the Angkor Wat. It is a beautiful treasure and one must visit to experience it.
