Privacy Screens
As communal spaces become de rigueur for designers, there is also a resurgence of creating intimate zones within those areas. That’s where privacy screens and curtains come in, offering a respite from the socializing people do every day (both in person or online). 3form’s Lina takes it a step further, with bamboo dowels giving the impression of openness while still inviting solitude.

3D Effect
By playing with perceptions and shape, products can give the illusion of a 3D effect with a 2D design, such as in Studio Job’s most recent Wood collection for Bisazza. Through the reinterpretation of parquet paired with the duo’s signature vibrant hues, the added dimension is as unexpected as it is contemporary—a satisfying trick for designers.

Green
The earthy tone is a welcome complement to some of the more neutral hues that have gained prominence in the past year. Neri & Hu’s green Jie rug for Nanimarquina, for instance, is calming and refreshing but also nods to a refined harmoniousness with restrained bursts of energy.

Colorblocking
Call it the Piet Mondrian effect. Bold shades, often opposites on the color wheel, that joyously mingle together are becoming a favorite of designers, including Masquespacio, who reimagined Oriol Llahona’s light fixtures for Raco. In Heno, bright colors mix with painted wood for just enough whimsy to give a space an ebullient lift.

Woven Designs

We’ve seen mesh make a comeback, and so has the woven look, a callback to craftsmanship and the midcentury, like in Smilow Furniture’s timeless collection available through Suite NY. Fabric intertwines, creating not just texture, but the sophisticated quality of a bygone era.

Mixed Materials
One of our favorite trends that has emerged in the past few years is the combination of marble and metal. And it’s not just those two materials that are reshaping product design either. RH Contract’s new restaurant line of tables, for example, mixes and matches everything from wood tops with brass bases to teak with stainless steel for a playful, luxe, and subtle differentiator.

Velvet
We’ve gone full nostalgia these days, where everything is due for a revival. Indeed, if you pay attention to the runway, you know that velvet—much like ‘90s kin baby doll dresses and flannel—is back. In Ligne Roset’s Philippe Nigro-designed Manarola, the smooth material, for example, offers an air of sophistication and richness to the seating range.
