Canopy by Hilton Hangzhou Jinsha Lake

Wilson Associates crafts a lakeside urban resort

Words by: Will Speros • Photos Wilson Associates

Canopy by Hilton has expanded it Greater Chinese portfolio with the debut of a new hotel within the largest manmade park in Hangzhou. Spread across 10 stories, the Canopy by Hilton Hangzhou Jinsha Lake overlooks the eponymous body of water and establishes a bond between indoor and outdoor environments to immerse guests in an urban resort feel.

“Canopy by Hilton encourages a local experience, which extends through food and beverage, art, and design,” says Jenn Di Stasi, designer, Wilson Associates’ New York studio. “The client wanted to utilize products and materials from Hangzhou-based manufacturers. After much research, our team discovered local suppliers, and we were able to source most of the materials locally, resulting in a truly unique design.”

Reminiscent of a classic Chinese garden, the tranquil lobby is outfitted with a lush green wall as well as bleacher seating installed beneath a wood-slat pitched ceiling inspired by the vernacular of traditional Chinese farmhouses. Classic Chinese patterns are reinterpreted to complement the modern flair of the hotel’s public spaces, from vibrant tones to modern concrete tiles. “We explored Chinese culture and architecture in all facets of the design,” Di Stasi explains.

In addition to framed vistas of surrounding parkland, all 196 accommodations are anchored by beds wrapped in wooden screen panels that project a unique interplay of light and shadow.

Modern furniture further populates guestrooms and suites with light and dark wood finishes atop light gray natural stone floors that infuse a residential-style ambiance.

Not only does the design instill a firm sense of place, it captures an earnest affection for the locale the Wilson Associates team hopes to share with travelers. “The design team immersed ourselves into the local culture and history through much research and exploration. In turn, we designed spaces that transport guests to an experience that captures the beauty of this rich location,” Di Stasi says.“We truly fell in love with the history and culture of this area during the design process.”
