A social project that brought together more than 300 investors, 4City is part restaurant and bar, part coffee shop, and part coworking space and lecture hall. The 1890s Renaissance Revival building included a slew of elements the designers wanted to save and restore. “We decided to [keep] the original rosy color palette in the entrance hall with the wonderful white molding on the walls,” says Kiev-based 2B.group architect Nata Kurilenko. With a chopped-up floorplan that had some rooms spread along windowed perimeter walls and others tucked within the interior, the designers sought to “unite the enclosed spaces, enhance visibility, and make every room easily accessible and inviting,” says architect Daria Ovechenko. The team cut out several tall doorways and enlarged existing ones, allowing patrons to see the ceiling in the adjacent space from any room. Black, charcoal, and bronze elements contrast soft pink paint and original white wall tiles to create a modern setting in the neoclassical building.
