For ATX Cocina, “there was an interest in bringing a new interpretation of what a Mexican restaurant could look and feel like,” explains Michael Hsu, principal of his namesake local firm. A newcomer to a recently redeveloped area in Austin’s downtown, the bright restaurant, elevated slightly above street level, enjoys rare views of Lady Bird Lake. Since the polished glass façade could not be altered, Hsu chose to create a sense of intimacy inside the building using a light-toned hemlock and pine wood on the arched ceiling, enameled greenhouse structures around the dining area, built-in upholstered seating, and lots of greenery. Colorful fabrics, blackened-steel cabinetry, copper accents, and art by local woodworker Aaron Michalovic help accentuate the restaurant’s warm wood tones.
