In an era where many restaurateurs pursue a historical revival, Casaplata restaurant and cocktail bar speaks refreshingly to the future. Madrid-based studio Lucas y Hernández-Gil avoided “nostalgia and looked for our own, singular image,” explains architect Cristina Domínguez Lucas, who cofounded the firm with Fernando Hernández-Gil in 2007. Building on an industrial concept, the designers mixed concrete, steel, and wood, while colorful perforated metal tables and velvet chairs brighten the space and are reflected by a striped silver ceiling. The atmosphere is a cross “between a Giorgio Morandi painting and the film Blade Runner,” adds Hernández-Gil. Indeed, the contrast between the raw space, vibrant furnishings, and minimalist lighting creates a welcome sense of warmth and harmony.
