Construction of the Japanese eatery began in 2014 and was rooted in an extensive study of the culture conducted by Masquespacio to ensure authenticity. When translated to English, Nozomi means both “Japanese high speed bullet train” and “fulfilled dream”—two meanings Nozomi’s founders related to when realizing the project. The restaurant’s East-meets-West duality is representative of these ideas.

The approximately 765-square-foot restaurant features a prominent use of concrete and gray present in structural elements including walls, ceilings, and floors.

The space’s rational-contemporary aesthetic is juxtaposed with traditionally classic aspects, such as natural carpentry and hand finishes.

Upon entry, a central cube creates two corridors toward the central lounge and incorporates decorative elements and bathroom entries with a continuous and open flow. The modules are inspired by traditional Japanese village streets.

The main lounge’s focal point is a sushi bar set under a ceiling studded with origami-inspired cherry blossoms to mimic the feel of being in a Japanese courtyard.

The main dining room includes an open kitchen adjacent to a small set of stairs leading to a partially secluded dining space.

The semi-private dining area provides a separate and intimate environment without isolating the diner from the rest of the restaurant.

Midcentury modern-inspired furnishings throughout bring a Western quality to the Japanese-style space.
