Our take: Designers are tackling the issue of climate change head on. Take Chilean architect Felipe Lagos’ vacation home, Casa R, built as a refuge in the Andes mountains in Vilches, Chile. The prefab cabin’s gabled roof prevents snow accumulation, while ventilated spaces absorb heat in the summer. Eco-conscious projects like this are responding to environmental conditions with thoughtful design solutions, providing a catalyst for change.
Brasserie 2050: Dutch firm Overtreders W’s temporary “barn of the future” and pop-up brasserie were designed to encourage people to eat in a more sustainable way. Built for the Netherlands’ Lowlands Festival, its name nods to the year 2050, when the world will need to feed a population of 10 billion. Pallet racks shaped the rectangular structure and white corrugated plastic made up the gabled roof, while vertical, herb-filled cabinets formed the open façade and sacks of grain were used as ballast.
